MEET THE CREW: JONNY, NUMBER 2 MECHANIC

Few engineering or technician jobs come more glamorous than those in Formula One. At least that’s what we imagine. Very little is said about these unsung heroes – the backbone of any successful team. Minuscule (albeit understandably) in comparison to the acres of print and screen space devoted to the drivers.

In an effort to readdress the balance we’re introducing you to members of the Renault Sport Formula One Team – one member each week. Today’s crew member is Jonathan ‘Jonny’ Goodenough, Team Mechanic.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB

I’m Number 2 Race Team Mechanic and have been with the team for one year now. I’m one of four mechanics who build and prepare the cars for races and tests. I assist with front end, rear end, and am number 1 mechanic on all other aspects of the car. I’m also currently ‘left rear wheel off man’, which means I’m responsible for removing the left rear wheel in pit stops.

WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATION?

After doing my GCSEs and A-levels, I took a college course and went on to do an apprenticeship in Motorsport Engineering.

WHAT WERE THE JOB REQUIREMENTS?

You of course need to have an educational background and hands-on knowledge in mechanics. And you must have had experience in lower Formulae. My last role was as Number 1 Mechanic in Formula 3.

HOW DID YOU GET THE JOB?

Very conventional I’m afraid. I saw the job online, applied and got the offer after interviews with the Team Manager and Chief Mechanic.

Meet the Crew: Jonny, Number 2 Mechanic

WHAT IS YOUR MOST EXCITING RACE MOMENT TO DATE?

It was actually in Formula 3, when my driver and car won the championship. It literally came down to the very last lap of the very last race! Our driver had to finish no lower than sixth to secure the championship. He was sixth for most of the race, and had to fight very hard to defend it against the seventh place driver. The feeling when he finally took the chequered flag was amazing!

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I’m your classic jeans and T-shirt kind of guy. After a long day in the garage, I want to wear something comfortable. There’s other stuff in my wardrobe, but nothing gets as much wear as my blue jeans. They’re dependable and go with everything.
